Rubén Olmo is the current director of the National Ballet of Spain (BNE), but to get there he had to overcome a complex and sometimes difficult life. He was born in the Sevillian neighborhood of Cerro del Águila and grew up in one of the poorest areas of the country, Las Tres Mil Viviendas, where he discovered that his thing was dance and flamenco. After going through all facets, from dancer to guest teacher, he became the director of the BNE, with which he is now starting a month-long tour of Mexico. “For us it is very important to return to Mexico 18 years later, among other reasons because the Mexican public understands Spanish dance and flamenco perfectly,” he explained in an interview with La Jornada.
